Town planning firm Bartley Burns has submitted a development application to the Brisbane City Council to turn the currently vacant, heritage-listed Bank of New South Wales Building on Queen Street Mall into an opulent bar, the Brisbane Times reports.
Bartley Burns filed the application on behalf of its client, Penny Black Hotel. The luxurious bar is inspired by London’s The Old Bank of England and New York’s Nomad Hotel – so much so that images of these two venues were included with the application.
The proposed re-design of the historic 1158-square-metre building features a large lobby, central bar and multiple seating areas, including one outdoors on the mall. Dark mahogany and other lavish finishes would feature strongly.
Despite internal renovations required on the ground floor, councillor in charge of city planning Julian Simmonds told the Times the council is in favour of the bar’s 1930s-theme, which is in step with current heritage architecture of the old bank.
The council is yet to grant formal approval for the proposal.
