Taro’s Ramen – arguably Brisbane’s best ramen joint – is launching a series of sake masterclasses this month.
Owner-chef Taro Akimoto will take guests through 13 Japanese sakes (or, nihonshu) paired with snacks such as lotus chips, edamame and either chicken karaage or braised pork, plus a main of chirashi sushi. (If you prefer ramen to sushi or if you have dietary requirements, Akimoto can accommodate – just let him know in advance.)
You’ll taste a wide range of styles, including sparkling, fruity, dry, unfiltered and slightly sour sakes. Plus, a rare koshu-style (matured) amber-coloured sake that's been aged for 30 years.
“I will discuss differences in sake styles based on different production methods, the factors that make the tastes so different and the specs and keywords you as a newly educated sake connoisseur can take away and apply to your sake shopping,” says Akimoto.
The four events will be held on Saturday and Monday evenings in June, coinciding with a change in operating hours – Taro's Ramen's city store is now closed on weekends.
From 6pm to 8pm.
