Coorparoo Bowls Club is holding a fundraiser this Sunday November 19. A proposed development of 80 aged-care units threatens much of its lawns and clubhouse. The plan is to move the heritage-listed 1930s clubhouse elsewhere.

The development means not only the potential loss an inner-city green space but also a popular live-music venue for up-and-coming local bands.

BC Michaels, drummer of Brisbane party-rock outfit Dune Rats and a Coorparoo local, is helping spearhead the campaign. He says losing the club would be a major blow to the community and live-music scene.

“There is complete oversupply of high-rises around the club at the moment,” Michaels says. “If you look at the balconies, nobody is living in any of them.

“[Coorparoo Bowls Club] is a place you can hear live music in the suburbs … [it’s] almost an anomaly in Brissie.”

Beginning at 2pm, Save Our Community Green Day will feature updates from the Save Our Community Green Committee and live music from surf-punks Concrete Surfers and bluegrass trio The Galilee Three.

Speeches will be made at 3pm by committee members and local MPs regarding the development. Michaels says raising awareness of the proposed development is key.

“We just want people to know what's happening, to come together and open up a conversation about it,” he says. “We hope that it can make a difference, and if it doesn't, at least we fucking tried.

“I hope everyone comes along on Sunday with a smile and has a schooner.”

Save Our Community Green Day takes over Coorparoo Bowls Club this Sunday November 19 from 2pm.
