“Just one game of Mario Kart,” I tell myself.

Two hours later, I exit Archie Brothers Cirque Electriq slightly weary-eyed and dazed.

I wasn’t the only one. When I visit the 1600-sqaure-metre wonderland in Toombul – the latest by Funlab, the group behind Holey Moley Golf Club, B. Lucky & Sons and Strike Bowling – there are people of all ages pushing buttons, shooting targets and aiming at hoops. “Archie Brothers is a place where you become a big kid again,” says venue manager Coco Lemire. “It’s so nice to see both younger and older people [having fun] here.”

Just be prepared to lose a few hours.

The sprawling venue opened in Toombul Shopping Centre’s new entertainment and dining precinct – dubbed “Upstairs” – late last week. It’s the fourth iteration after launching in Sydney, Melbourne and Auckland.

Funlab is known for creating full-blown playgrounds for adults, but Archie Bros is something else. Besides the dozens of arcade games, there are six bowling lanes, dodgem cars, a virtual-reality ride and a 3D movie theatre.

And the food is just as over-the-top as everything else here. A small-scale Ferris wheel arrives at the table filled with deep-fried snacks such as mac’n’cheese bites, spicy chicken wings and fries. A generous plate of crispy potato gems is topped with cheddar-cheese dust and caramelised garlic aioli. And there’s a three-meat burger (beef patty, pulled pork and bacon) sandwiched between a pink bun.

Drinks include a selection of wines and beers, but the real fun is with the cocktails, mocktails and spikeable milkshakes. Lemire’s favourite is the Schnapps, Crackle & Pop – cinnamon whisky, butterscotch schnapps, bitters, maple and popcorn syrups, soda and whipped cream garnished with popcorn and served inside a popcorn box.

“[After] travelling around the world, I have never seen a concept like Archie Brothers,” says Lemire, who previously toured with Cirque du Soleil as the sales and customer experience manager. “Some people can be overwhelmed [by the thought of it], but you just have to experience it.”
