XXXX is out and Great Northern is in for this year’s State of Origin match at Suncorp Stadium.
That’s the news from Carlton & United Breweries, which released a statement this afternoon saying that Great Northern Super Crisp would be poured for the July 11 fixture.
The news follows the revelation over the weekend that XXXX wouldn’t be available at this year’s State of Origin after the NRL late last week signed Carlton & United Breweries to its “Beer of Origin” sponsorship category.
The signing created a conflict with both the NSWRL and the QRL, which have deals with Lion, Carlton’s major competitor. The Blues will this year drop VB from its jumper to instead carry the Tooheys New logo, while 2018 marks 30 years of continuous XXXX sponsorship for the Maroons.
XXXX might still be available at the match but only in corporate boxes, as the Courier Mail reports.
“Generally, the public will principally be served one of the CUB products but I’d imagine that because of the corporate boxes and other relationships there will be XXXX at the ground for those people,” QRL chairman Bruce Hatcher told the Courier.
“Australia’s leading brewer, Carlton & United Breweries, is proud that Queensland’s own beer, Great Northern Super Crisp, will be poured at Suncorp for the State of Origin,” CUB’s statement read.
It continued: “A number of recent media reports [including Broadsheet’s] have stated that another of our beers, Victoria Bitter, will be served at Suncorp for State of Origin. These reports are incorrect.”
