Yeronga locals were left scratching their heads when Miles Gillham’s popular eatery The Hyde Out suddenly closed its doors in 2015. But it was only a week later that Kylie and Gavin Bartholomew flipped the script. What was a moody dinner spot that did breakfasts is now a classy breakfast spot that does dinners.
The Bartholomews are hospitality veterans, but the nearly 100-seater Seven South is the first venue that could properly accommodate their ambitions. The couple retained The Hyde Out’s feature wall constructed of timber recovered from the 2011 floods, but everything else is a crisp shade of white – ceilings, tiled walls and Harry Bertoia bar stools – with clean timber and brass highlights dotted about the place.
Outside, bi-fold doors open on to a generous al fresco area, four-legged friends welcome (good thing, seeing as Fehlberg Park opposite boasts an off-leash area).
The breakfast menu is about applying clever twists to the classics: there are plenty of poached eggs, say, but they tend to come with green pea felafel or maybe even spaghetti.
Lunch might range from reuben sandwiches through to duck salads, while the three-nights-a-week dinner menu is classic modern Australian: perhaps eye fillet, lamb rump and confit duck leg.
For drink, less is more: a short list of carefully selected Australian wines backed up by a trio of tap beers and numerous bottled options.
