The self-proclaimed “Best cafe on Lewin Street” is hard to argue with, if only because it’s the only cafe on Lewin Street. Far away from parking nightmares and cyclist haunts, you’ll find Lewin Street Store Cafe.

Thrown together with a few makeshift tables and chairs, the tiny cafe and general store strives to be a service to its neighbours, rather than a trumped-up destination. Most of its regulars live within walking distance and stop by for a coffee from Allpress Roasters, basic supplies such as avocados and milk, or to grab a quick sandwich.

The simple menu offers fewer than ten options, ranging from a basic fruit salad, to the tried-and-true avocado toast. For something a little more substantial, try the pear, tahini and honey toast or Tiger Toast (good old vegemite and cheese).

It’s simple food in a simple setting, and Lewin Street Store could easily be mistaken for a private property on which friends have gathered for a coffee on the patio. And after a few visits, that’s what it starts to feel like.
