A part of the first wave of bars in Brisbane to take advantage of new licensing legislation that made it easier and less expensive for small-time operators to open up new ventures, Brew has since capitalised on much more than just nighttime trade. From morning meetings to after dark drinking, Brew switches gears seamlessly, with coffee and beer served in equal measure.

The atmosphere is similar to a university bar, where students can feel at home among the CBD’s sea of suits. Past the conspicuous roller door, you’ll find a dimly lit hideaway decked out with AstroTurf, poster-clad walls and a mix of pre-loved furniture – a healthy dose of grunge in an otherwise shiny and polished CBD.

For the most part, the prices match: Brew has a special every night of the week, such as $10 cocktails, student deals on Stone & Wood beer and generous happy hours.

The all-day menu is similarly low-fuss. There’s everything from pancakes, chicken burgers and pumpkin salads to grazing boards.

By day, it’s common to find students and freelancers enjoying lunch and making use of the free Wi-Fi. Later on, the vibe gets more upbeat, as cafe turns into bar.
