The Blacksmith manifesto is simple: first class coffee and healthy affordable food.

Foremost, owner Brittany May wants to look after the locals – people coming in on their way to work. Blacksmith also fosters community spirit by renting out the space to local charity groups and businesses for functions and workshops.

May cherry-picks the best of inner-city juices and coffee. The former product is sourced from the popular HRVST St Juices; the latter from Bear Bones Espresso in Fortitude Valley. The house blend, Papa Bear, strikes the balance between big-bodied chocolate flavours and a lighter, more acidic finish.

The food focuses on convenience and comfort. Pecan maple muesli, toasted quinoa granola, miscellaneous bowls of healthy things and assorted gourmet sandwiches and bagels all feature – perfect for both takeaway and dine in.

Though many of the customers are in a hurry, the cafe’s position away from a main road makes it a pleasant place to take your time. The staff is relaxed and upbeat even on the busiest mornings. A cafe can’t be all things to all people. But for southside locals and visitors, Blacksmith gets pretty close.
