About A Boy and a Girl
The boy is Steve Hazlett. The girl is Jodi Hazlett. They met later in life, bonding over of a love of good food and wine. With entirely different backgrounds, their organic grocer and cafe is the coming together of two passions and skill sets.
Inside the converted Newstead warehouse, a wide alleyway filled with cafe tables opens up to a commercial kitchen and grocery store. Shelves handmade by Steve are stacked high with bottles of wine.
The fridges are filled with local beers and ciders. A coloured dot system indicates whether the drinks are organic, biodynamic or preservative-free. The other half of the store contains pantry goods, fresh produce, frozen foods and household items.
Behind the kitchen counter is Jodi’s territory. A nutritionist by trade, she fills it with raw treats, gluten-free cakes and fresh salads. A short food-intolerant, part vegan and part gluten-free menu expands the cafe offering to include spelt pancakes, housemade baked beans and more.
Education is a big part of the vision. Keep an eye out for regular cooking classes with Jodi and drop in for Wine Wednesday with Steve. He pours great drops and shares great knowledge at weekly tastings.
