In ancient times, Simon Booy would have been a popular apothecary. He's a pharmacist experienced in home brewing who has poured that passion into opening Saccharomyces Beer Cafe, with brother and sister Dirk and Felicity Booy, and friend Luke Gardiner.

Named for the yeast used in baking and fermenting, the venue specialises in beer. It’s reminiscent of a relaxed German beer hall. The open and airy fit-out was inspired by the collective journeys of the four owners and scatters intimate marble tables amid tall hardwood benches for large groups.

The beer, cider and wine are a mix of local and imported. There’s a vast selection of bottled beer in the fridge and 10 taps with rotating beers, number 10 being the one to ask for if you're seeking something unusually distinctive. Once any keg runs out, it's replaced with something new.

Food is comfort-style and includes burgers, chicken wings and mac ’n’ cheese. Coffee, available from 7:30am weekdays, is by the local Artisan Coffee Roaster and features a house blend and rotating single-origin roast.
