Le Royale sits upstairs from The French Exit – another Anyday Group venue – in the heritage-listed Coal Board Building. Here, the focus isn’t on fancy French brasserie fare but on good tunes and good booze. Music is at the core of the experience, with three rotating house bands putting jazzy spins on pop music.

The beers are exclusively Aussie – and the backbar is stocked with spirits from local distributors. There’s a subtle Quentin Tarantino theme, with all the drinks named in reference to Pulp Fiction. If wine’s more your thing, then you’re in luck. Le Royale has access to a plethora of high-end bottles from Anyday’s reserve wine cellar list.

Although drinks drive the offering here, food is far from an afterthought. The menu is still French-inspired but leans casual. On Friday and Saturday nights, the kitchen opens late, making it the perfect spot for a nightcap.
