The Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art have closed until further notice, it was announced in a statement to media this afternoon.
The decision follows Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s announcement last night of drastic new action to drive home social distancing measures, which includes the closure of all pubs, bars, nightclubs, cinemas, casinos, indoor sporting venues, entertainment venues and places of worship (i.e. churches and mosques) from midday today.
“The health and well-being of our visitors, our staff and volunteers, and the wider gallery community is our top priority,” the statement read.
“We would like to acknowledge the global scope of this challenge and the uncertainty faced by each of us as individuals and as a community. We thank you for your understanding, and your ongoing support of the gallery.”
The QAGOMA statement said the galleries will reopen when “time is right”, with further updates posted online.
The State Library of Queensland is also closed from today until further notice. QPAC remains closed for all performances until April 30.
