Eccentric wardrobes are well serviced by vintage store Ill Gotten Gains, right near popular Thebarton pub The Wheatsheaf.

Owner Taya Saturn greets male and female customers with a heartfelt “hello gorgeous”, a reflection of her dedication to self-confidence and old-fashioned service. Saturn has a background in costuming and encourages all shapes and sizes to feel beautiful in their skin. It all makes for an empowering shopping experience.

The space (a former band rehearsal room) is small but the deep-red velvet curtains, well-worn rugs and vintage Turkish chandeliers add a touch of boutique charm. Racks heave with pre-loved clothing for men and women. Saturn buys top-quality stock and the likes of cabaret vixen Carla Lippis drop in to pass on finds from all over the globe.

There’s also plenty of new, modern vintage. Va-va-voom dresses by labels Vixen by Micheline Pitt, Laura Byrnes, and Pin-Up Girl are shipped in from the States.

Out of hours appointments are available and every item has a story. Saturn is only too happy to tell them.
