Summertown Studio
An old warehouse on an industrial backstreet in Somerton Park, surrounded by used-car dealerships and crash repairers, is not the most obvious location for this eclectic retail and co-working space.
The sprawling site, itself a former tyre manufacturer, is the home of Summertown Studio, which is spearheaded by Porch Sessions founder Sharni Honor and teammate Sarah Bradford who both live near the area. The third team member is Honor's beautiful blue heeler-kelpie-cross Craig, who's likely to welcome you on arrival.
The gorgeous shopfront is filled with hanging plants and kitsch vintage objects: Elvis matryoshka dolls, floor rugs, vintage boots, surfboards and more are strewn about the place. The charming lived-in vibe will come as no surprise to anyone who’s attended a Porch event. It also stocks the work of local makers such as jeweler Mano Objects, Littlest Vintage, Mrs Fishers Pottery, clothing label Yeohaus, Etikette Candles and Some Skincare.
A natural-light-filled loft above is Honor and Bradford’s new headquarters for their various Porch projects as well as Honor’s event-styling business, The Vibe Company, and Bradford’s floristry business, Sundays Design Co. It doubles as a yoga studio on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings.
Out the back is a co-working space for people looking for semi-permanent desks and hot-desking, available at $15 a day. To help with productivity, there's an in-house barista – Port Elliot-based coffee roaster DeGroot has a coffee cart on-site – plus Saudade Portuguese Tarts.
The enormous, flexible space will evolve with the needs of its inhabitants and visitors. Expect one-off Porch gigs, workshops, long lunches and pop-up dinners.
