When Brisbane’s Swop Clothing Exchange opened an outpost in Adelaide, only a small amount of stock came along for the ride. The store’s current collection is almost exclusively sourced from local wardrobes.

The Hindley Street staircase descends into the basement store, where nineties boy band posters grace the walls while the soundtrack sticks to mostly punk and indie. Co-owner Emily Sheahan (the other two live in Brisbane) offers enthusiastic advice on every piece that makes its way through the store, while also playing DJ and obliging music requests as you browse.

Friday is ‘buy day’, when Swop gets an injection of new stock as people bring in clothes to trade for cash or store credit. The ideal finds are vintage pieces, good brands, and anything that fits well with Adelaide’s style. You might have already missed the Dolce and Gabbana Scarface shirt that quickly passed in and out, but finding something interesting isn’t a hard task.

Swop is the type of place where impromptu guitar sessions are encouraged and no one frowns if you just want to chill on the couch with a magazine. Of course, it’s even better when you leave with a new bag too.
