Penley Estate Cellar Door
It was an unexpected move to bring two competing wine regions together, but for Penley Estate co-owner Ang Tolley opening a cellar door in Mclaren Vale was all about spreading the love for South Australia’s wine regions.
Tolley wanted to take advantage of McLaren Vale’s proximity to Adelaide – it’s a significantly shorter trip than the four-hour drive to the Coonawarra winery.
Penley Estate has been in the Tolley family for more than 30 years, and Ang took over the dynasty with her sister Bec in 2015. They’re as close to wine royalty as you can get in South Australia – a fifth-generation wine family.
The McLaren Vale cellar door is part of a wider remodel for the label since the sisters took over, and has a contemporary feel thanks to Claire Kneebone’s decoration of the cellar door.
The interior is beautifully finished and features sleek, textured tiles and brushed brass to complement the darker hues.
In terms of its wine, Penley Estate’s winemaker Kate Goodman, has received accolades for her drops. She injects a fresh, expressive take on the Coonawarra classics – traditionally full-bodied reds such as cabernet sauvignon.
Visitors to the cellar door can expect wine and chocolate pairings, as well as tastings of the full range.
