Luis Fernando Gutierrez, Ariadne Nieto and Jon Varcoe opened Revolución Mexicana with a simple goal in mind: to create a space that felt like home. They felt (perhaps rightly) that authentic Mexican food was under-represented in Adelaide.
The former butcher shop is fitted with furniture from a company Gutierrez worked for in Guadalajara, and the walls are decorated with photographs of Mexican revolutionaries. Most produce is sourced from the Central Market itself, with corn tortillas made on-site using their own machine.
Tacos are the centrepiece of the menu. The eight choices include meat, fish, vegetarian and vegan options. For breakfast, you’ll find huevos rancheros (fried eggs on tortillas, topped with salsa, beans and meat or vegetables) and chilaquiles (tortilla strips in red or green salsa with cream, cheese and beans).
Other menu highlights include mole enchiladas (chicken tortillas topped with chocolate-and-chilli paste, served with pickled onions, sesame seeds, beans and Mexican rice) and flautas (chicken and vegetable tortillas served with lettuce, feta, cream, green salsa, beans and Mexican rice).
Drinks include Corona beer, aguas frescas (a fresh fruit drink often sold by Mexican street vendors), and Jarritos-brand soft drinks.
