When Paolo Brustolon placed an order for 5000 branded cups, he didn’t expect them to be the size of a typical vase. Now, his garage is filled with boxes of 22-ounce cups, which gave birth to the enormous thickshakes served at Burger Republic.

Alongside shakes such as jam doughnut, peanut butter and Nutella, you’ll find a whole page of cheeseburgers as well as a handful of chicken, lamb and veggie options.

The shop’s Coorong Angus patties are grilled behind a large wooden-clad counter at the rear, which also houses a fridge filled with 50 different beers in bottles and cans. Brews are mostly local, with the odd import such as Brooklyn Brewery lager and Corona.

For seating, there’s simple stools and low tables with a wooden carrier of condiments to modify your meal. If you feel like you’re being watched, that’s probably the wall peppered with black and white celebrity mugshots, just next to the specials board.

If the burgers and gigantic shake somehow fail to satisfy, choose from a range of sides including thick-battered onion rings with ranch dressing, and fries with aioli.

The whole menu is available for takeaway, or delivery through the Milkman and UberEATS apps.
