Red House Shop & Cafe
A welcome from granny and breakfast cooked by mum is how you’ll be greeted at Red House. Owner Emily Pescod staffs this former railway station with three generations of family, and keeps her dog Basil in the side yard.
She spent three years combatting red tape to meet heritage-listing requirements for the building, which was vacant for 20 years prior.
You’ll often hear trains whirr by, because the platform opposite still functions. It’s an amusing quirk, as are the menu items' playful names and the stand-out build-your-own breakfast (you can choose from 16 options).
The large stone building is decorated with handmade tables and refurbished furniture. The former ticket office now serves as the main counter.
Wander through the 70-seat area and you’ll find a private room, small courtyard and vintage store that Pescod personally curates. The store is carried over from her Gilles Street Market stall, which ran for nearly four years.
