Features
There are cellar doors, and then there’s Khou. This sleek inner-city spot is by Signature Wines, a family-run winery with vineyards in the Barossa, Adelaide Hills and McLaren Vale. Here, owners Dan and Rebecca Khouzam have created a versatile morning-till-evening situation that bends the typical cellar-door standard. Drop in for coffees and toasties first thing, or come later to taste drops from the Signature Wines range with wine-friendly snacks and woodfired pizza.
Enter and be met with banquette seating punctuated by terrazzo tabletops, and more seating along bi-fold windows gazing out to King Willian Street. You can also sit at the lengthy marble bar, which is where you’ll find precisely made house cocktails (think Brambles, Sours and spicy Margaritas). But, this being a cellar door, you’d be wise to order some wine. Highlights from the Signature cellar include a sauvignon blanc and a pinot noir from the Coordinates and Sector ranges, respectively.
If you’re passing by before 11am, Khou has you covered with a tight edit of toasties, and coffee by Allpress. After 4pm, crowd your terrazzo table with wine-friendly snacks like spiced popcorn, cheeseboards, sliced-to-order charcuterie and little soldiers topped with pesto and shaved Italian speck. For something heftier, there are old-school pies from new-wave pizzeria Pan & Vine across the street.
