Hahn and Hamlin
On Main Street, Hahndorf, there’s an eatery celebrating South Australian produce. Owner Erica Rushbrook has worked extensively in restaurants and wineries and in health and nutrition around Adelaide. It was this experience that encouraged a love of local produce. Every dish on the menu features local delicacies such as Beerenberg jam, Goodies and Grains muesli and Udder Delights cheeses.
Time spent living in New York inspired the delicatessen-style menu, from which visitors can try a range of cheese, pickles and cured meats. Pick up a hunk of washed-rind cheese, a jar of chutney or a dozen eggs to take home.
For lunch there’s seasonal soup, which pairs well with a changing menu of grilled sandwiches, including vegan options. Or tuck into a hearty main meal such as slow-cooked Moroccan beef stew.
Coffee is from Adelaide’s Rio Coffee. The beans are fair-trade and organic. You’ll also find Barossa-made Scullery Tea, Bickford’s soft drinks and Mojo Kombucha from Willunga.
For an afternoon tipple, local wines pair with a build-your-own cheeseboard that includes ashed and buffalo-milk varieties, or loaded hummus plates with pomegranate, feta, mint and sourdough.
The space is a heritage cottage (previously home to Bendbrook Wines, which populates the wine list) with the charm of exposed-stone walls, original wooden floorboards and a cosy fireplace.
