The Village Baker is by classically trained chef Ben Sachse, whose pies, finger buns and sourdough breads have won top honours at the Royal Adelaide Show. He and his wife Tracy Sachse now run two popular bakery-cafes in Glenside and Black Forest, where you’ll find a range of quintessential Aussie baked goods informed by age-old European traditions.
Twice-baked almond croissants, pork-and-fennel sausage rolls or the bakery's popular jelly cakes are quick options to pair with your coffee. But the award-winning five-hour braised lamb shank pie – available in both individual and family sizes – is a must-order staple.
If you’re after something for an easy dinner at home, there’s a generous selection of take-home products including moussaka, lasagna, and shepherd’s pie. You’ll also find celebration cakes such as Oreo sponge, tiramisu and croquembouche.
The Sachses’ Burnside Village flagship was the first of the two stores to open and has been reimagined a number of times. The current iteration features an expanded space with ample seating and a bright contemporary interior.
