Gin and cheese. They mightn’t be the renowned bedfellows that wine and cheese are, but they’re nonetheless a helluva match.
Woodside Cheese Wrights director Kris Lloyd has gone a step further than a run-of-the-mill pairing, though. She’s incorporated gin into a new range of cheese. The newly released G&C is a mild, creamy textured cheddar infused with a hint of the hard stuff.
It’s available in five types in collaboration with five local distilleries: Settlers Spirits, Kangaroo Island Spirits, Ambleside Distillery, Applewood Distillery and 23rd Street Distillery. “Each cheese has a slightly different flavour given the different botanicals used in the gin,” says Lloyd.
Distiller Rowland Short from Settlers Spirits in McLaren Flat initially floated the idea past Lloyd, which “seemed a perfectly natural fit”, she says. “With South Australia’s spirit industry booming, I approached a few more of our amazing gin producers and they were all super keen to get on board.”
The G&C cheese will be available at this year’s CheeseFest + Ferment, which returns to Rymill Park in October. It’s also available at Woodside Cheese Wrights and the distillery doors of the five participating producers.
