Salted caramel and white chocolate from a relative newbie, a pistachio scoop from a local legend, the spot all dessert-fiends love and more.

It’s summer and, for us, that means the beach, fish’n’chips, and dreaming up any excuse we can to get a scoop of ice cream. In Adelaide, we’re spoilt for choice with great gelato on nearly every corner, but everyone has their go-to.

So where do the city’s hottest chefs go for a scoop of the cold stuff? We went straight to the source. Here’s where Adelaide’s best chefs get gelato.

I’m not much of a sweet tooth, but Bottega Gelateria at either Prospect or Henley always fills the void. I change up my order every time, but the best I’ve had so far was a rhubarb crumble gelato on a dark choc-dipped cone.

I can never go past Messina! The flavours are experimental and always changing, which keeps it interesting. So every time I go, I get something new. It’s close to Rundle Street too, so it’s a nice treat to have before or after my shift.

I have two favourites. I like Glatisse. The ricotta, honey, macadamia gelato highlights the best native ingredients. It uses raw Adelaide Hills Houghton honey paired with the creamy La Casa del Formaggio ricotta with roasted Queensland macadamias. I also love the little ice cream cart that’s on display. My other favourite is Ovo Gelato. It is the place for pastry chefs looking for ice cream! They have a canelé-with-milk gelato, a crème brûlée gelato, and a pistachio white chocolate rosewater gelato, which reminds me of my time travelling through Turkey and Morocco.

Messina in Kent Town. Its flavours are creative, and the salted caramel and white chocolate is a perfect blend of sweet and salty. The kids love it too.

I always go for pistachio gelato from Bottega Gelateria.

I like Gelista. It’s hidden in the back streets of Ridleyton. Its ice cream and gelato have such an authentic taste and it’s well worth the trek. There is an extensive flavour range that covers the basics, through to the more gourmet and specialty. My favourite is the salted caramel macadamia. And to make it even better, it’s great to support a family-owned, local business.

Pizzateca in McLaren Vale has just opened an amazing gelato shop called Gelatecca right next door, where you find super fresh gelato made with local produce.
