The Sunny’s boys are at it again, with a no-holds-barred culinary jamboree this Monday night.
Regular collaborator Duncan Welgemoed (Africola), Melbourne’s Victor Liong (Lee Ho Fook) and Sydney’s Mitch Orr (ACME) and Pasi Petänen (ex-Café Paci) will take over the Sunny’s kitchen for a four-course, Italian-inspired dinner. “They’re going to come hang out, do a wacky dish and have a bit of a party, basically,” says Sunny’s co-owner Ash Wilson. The three visiting chefs are all in town for Tasting Australia.
Spearheaded by Welgemoed, the second instalment of Quattro Formaggio will include Chinese pizza (“affectionately named chinizza,” says Wilson) from Liong, carbonara from “Prince of Pasta” Orr, breadsticks with pickled radicchio and suckling pig prosciutto from Welgemoed and liquorice tiramisu from Petanen. Sugar’s Driller Jet Armstrong will be on the decks.
But don’t jump to book ahead: the “relaxed and playful” night has a strict walk-ins only policy. It aims to be something of an antidote to the formal dinners Adelaide is flush with this month.
“We wanted to remove the formalities of it and make it open to everyone,” says Wilson. “You might get people working in a bar and starting at 8 or 9pm and if we’re opening at 5pm they can come down, eat some food, hang out for a bit and have a drink without having to spend $80 or $100 to have a set-menu sit-down dinner.”
The event follows last month’s joint dinner with guest chefs Welgemoed, Luke Burgess (ex-Garagiste), Steve Austin (Belle’s Hot Chicken) and Deb Blank (ex-Ester), and February’s Africola takeover with LA mix master Awesome Tapes From Africa.
“We always had in our minds that we’d be doing parties like this, or getting international or interstate DJs and doing a food pairing thing with it,” says Wilson. With a tireless team of hospo devotees and a revolving door of collaborators, we’re expecting plenty more to come from the Solomon Street crew.
