Long before Sunny’s Pizza there was Bubby Noodle.

The semi-regular dinner series from one of the owners of Sunny’s, Andy Nowell, helped sate Adelaide’s ramen cravings before the arrival of now-favourites Black Dog Gallery, Tuno Izakaya and Ramen and Izakaya Himeji.

After a few years’ hiatus, Bubby returns this weekend for one night only. So you best make the most of it. Get your hands around steaming bowls of shio (salt-based broth) or shoyu (soy-based broth) ramen with fermented bamboo shoots, soft soy egg and spring onion, plus your choice of protein: master-stock pork belly, wood-oven gojuchang chicken or fresh enoki mushroom.

There’ll also be two “not ramen” dishes: Kimchizza (a continent-crossing wheel of dough topped with kimchi, toasted nori, scamorza and sesame) and fried-chicken dippers (dunk them in gojuchang mayo, burnt-spring-onion sauce and Japanese dukka).

And what’s a Sunny’s shindig without music? There’ll also be local DJs on the ones and twos.

Bubby Noodle: The Return of Bubby is at Sunny’s Pizza on Sunday May 6 from 5pm.
