This weekend Solomon Street’s unashamedly kitsch Sunny’s Pizza is hosting a pizza party with retro Melbourne joint Leonardo’s Pizza Palace.

To an Adelaide crowd, Sunny’s needs no introduction. We love it for the ’80s pop culture references, fun and fresh drinks, and crisp, fluffy pizza. Down in Melbourne, Leonardo’s has a similar reputation. Since opening in December 2018, the Carlton pizzeria made waves with its pleasing old-school Italian pies and den-like carpeted interior.

Sunny’s brought a taste of South Australia to Melbourne with a takeover last year, and this weekend Leonardo’s is returning the favour.

The Famiglia Feeling pop-up runs from 3pm until late on Sunday May 19, and its killer one-off menu is the perfect way to ward off the Sunday scaries.

The drinks list is suitably Victorian. Cocktails include a tropical spritz with Melbourne Gin Company dry gin, Aperol and green grape, and the Pizza Negroni (with added “erbs n spices”). Wines include a reisling from Harcourt in central Victoria, and a skin-contact fiano, sangiovese and chilled red from Heathcote.

There'll be moreish snacks like cacio e pepe polenta, and stracciatella with smoked mushrooms, ’nduja, creamy roasted leek and fried rosemary panagratto. Pies include pepperoni and zucchini with ricotta and hot honey, a pork and saltbush number with fermented fennel, and garlic prawn and squid-ink salami with green caper sauce and garlic oil. Dessert is a classic tiramisu.

To keep the vibes high all night, Edd Fisher, one half of Wax’o Paradiso, is also making the trip for a guest DJ set.
