Two former Larry & Ladd employees have joined forces to breathe new life into the space, keeping the same speciality coffee but upping the ante on everything else. They are chef Carlos Astudillo, who has 20 years’ experience in hospitality at Magill Estate Kitchen and Hey Jupiter, and Billy Hogarth, who has been with Larry & Ladd for two years.
The Chile-born chef has added a couple of menu items. There’s a completo (loaded hotdog) with avo and tomato and 12-hour pulled-pork rolls with Kewpie mayo and spicy slaw on a brioche bun. The new all-day breakfast menu includes French toast with blueberry compote, mascarpone and almonds, and poached eggs on sourdough with fresh tomato, avocado and baby spinach.
The pair has knocked down a wall, added a fresh coat of paint and new green Larry & Ladd branding to reflect their new direction. “Our goal for Larry & Ladd is to be a community [space], not just a shop or cafe,” says Hogarth. “I’m passionate about making everyone feel welcome.”
What’s unchanged is the same excellent coffee. They’re sticking with Five Senses Coffee, now with batch brews and pour-over options. However, now you can also buy a bag of beans to take home. “We think you should be able to make great coffee at home as well,” says Hogarth.
