When Anastasia and Grant Murray took over North Adelaide’s Oxford Hotel in July 2015, they gave it a face-lift that few expected.

“Our vision was to create a hotel, restaurant and bar that everyone could feel they were a part of creating,” Anastasia says, “that made people feel something.”

Small painted panels lead the eye through the space and larger walls are reserved for murals. A colourful dining-room piece by Lucas Croall keeps things bright and playful.

Upstairs there’s space reserved for a six-month rotating artist residencies. It was inspired by a trip to Prague’s Artbanka Museum of Young Art.

“Each room in the gallery was given to an artist who had something to say and each room has its own individual message,” Anastasia says. “We wanted to share that feeling, not just through art, but in every aspect of the hotel, and not be pretentious about it.”

Adelaide muralist Jack Fran is key artist and art curator until October. “My role is pretty simple,” he says. “I’ll hold two exhibitions upstairs and paint murals downstairs.” Work by Adelaide photographer Brendan Hinton, oil painter Kate Elson, and Sydney illustrator Justy Galang (aka theWORST) are on display til mid-July. Check out Galang’s Bowie and Prince mural upstairs.

Another exhibition, INNERGIFTS, kicks off on August 6 and is held as part of the South Australian Living Artist Festival. And look out for upcoming events like ArtSmash, where a piece will be created, auctioned and (potentially) destroyed, for the wrong (or right) price.

“The possibilities are endless,” Fran says. “Anastasia has an artistic background and so she understands first-hand the struggles. Artists are exploited for their work so it is important at The Oxford that artists come first.”
