Seafood delivery services have seen a boom in recent years. No longer satisfied with the freshness of what’s on supermarket shelves, customers have started buying oysters, lobsters and prawns directly from aquaculturists and fishmongers. On top of whole fish and fillets for Friday night’s dinner, these companies deliver cooked tiger prawns, frozen squid and live mussels – and in some cases you can order for next-day delivery.
Fair Seafood
For the best possible catch of the day, order a seasonal box of freshly caught fish from Fair Seafood. The co-operative works with local fishermen to sell seafood directly to restaurants and home cooks, with traceability and seasonality at its core. The $40 Fair Seafood Seasonality Box includes two species caught that week: a popular one such as Australian salmon or southern calamari, and a secondary species such as yellowfin whiting or snapper. You can opt out of shellfish, prawns, crustaceans and clams if they’re not your thing. If you prefer to have more control, the website is updated daily with the latest catch of the day and you can choose whole, scaled, gutted or filleted fish. Depending on seasonality, you’ll find herring, flathead, Goolwa pippies, flounder, prawns, southern rock lobster, gummy shark and King George whiting.

Madam Seafood
In 2017, a group of Adelaide mums who like to cook seafood came together to set up an online shop where they could buy direct from a fishmonger without having to leave the house. Madam Seafood operates in conjunction with Mark Lee Fish Farm. Depending on what’s in season, you can order live pippies, live mud crab and live blue swimmer crab. Catches come from all over the country, including Tasmania and Western Australia, but the shop also stocks local Coffin Bay Pacific oysters, baby greenlip abalone farmed off Kangaroo Island and Port Lincoln, and South Australian Balmain bugs caught in the St Vincent and Spencer Gulf. As well as the fresh stuff, it also stocks canned abalone, frozen squid, tins of caviar and cooked Taiwan-style sesame oil Endeavour prawns – plus ready-made sashimi or Sichuan style blue swimmer crabs. Typically orders close at 5pm on Thursdays for same-week deliveries. There’s a $50 minimum spend.

Signature Oysters
Once a month, Signature Oysters gives its club members access to a harvest of oysters from its farm on the Clyde River in Batemans Bay. The monthly offering could include Pacific oysters, Sydney Rock oysters, or the harder-to-come-by Angasi oysters. Live and unshucked, they’ll arrive at your doorstep in insulated seafood containers with ice packs. Delivery is available right across Australia. To sign up, add your name to the mailing list and keep your eyes peeled for details and access to the next monthly harvest. Keep an eye on Signature Oysters’ Instagram for some recipes to dress up the month’s yield. Perhaps a summery mango chili sauce, or a cucumber ginger lime dressing?
