Ondeen in the Adelaide Hills Has Closed “For Now”

Ondeen has closed. The Adelaide Hills destination diner announced the news on Friday August 7.

In a statement posted to Instagram, the team wrote, “It is with incredibly heavy hearts that we share that Ondeen has unexpectedly received notice of the termination of its lease and has been forced to close for now.”

The property’s landlord, Mark Schilling, confirmed to Broadsheet through his representatives that the lease was terminated “for default”, which means the tenant failed to uphold the terms of the agreement through unpaid rent or other breaches. The same representatives confirmed Ondeen’s operators had been served multiple notices before the landlord terminated the lease.

Owner and managing director Deborah Kingsbury disputed that claim when speaking to In Daily.

The restaurant opened in March 2024 and nine months later, we named it one of the best new restaurants of the year. Its reputation was bolstered by chef Kane Pollard, who was culinary director at the time of opening. Full Circle Spirits head distiller Rose Kentish was also involved at the time of opening. Pollard left the business in November 2025. Kentish is also no longer associated with Ondeen.

Pollard’s “closed-loop” dishes won Ondeen many fast fans. Menu highlights included brined tomato and smoked mussels on fried toast, pickled sardines served with cauliflower cream and sweetcorn, and a honey malt crème caramel with fresh honeycomb.

After a court induction Kingsbury announced in a statement that Ondeen would reopen. “We are pleased that following a Supreme Court hearing this morning [August 14], court orders have been put in place that will allow us to re-open. We are thrilled to be re-opening our doors this Sunday [August 16] for cellar door customers with the restaurant re-opening mid next week [around August 19]," said Kingsbury in a statement.
