Mother’s Day is going to look a little different this year. The customary cafe brunch is off the cards. And social-distancing measures mean there’ll be a few less hugs going around. But you can still show your love with these excellent gift packs, hampers and fancy takeaway meals from some of our favourites.
Lunch and wine from Fino
Both Fino Seppeltsfield and its city-slicker sibling Fino Vino shut their doors at the end of March. Luckily for us they’re reopening this month for takeaway packs, starting with a multi-course Mother’s Day lunch for two. For $110 you’ll get pickled vegetables and house-cured salumi, a lamb pie (filled with Hutton Vale Farm lamb, Kalamata olives, tomatoes and Barossa shiraz), a side of mashed potato, and tiramisu for dessert. Naturally it’s paired with Seppeltsfield wines: an Eden Valley riesling and Barossa shiraz. “The inspiration behind the Mother’s Day menu was simple: we want to bring our most loved dishes to mums across South Australia,” says owner-chef David Swain. Co-owner and restaurant manager Sharon Romeo is excited to bring Fino into people’s homes. “Given [on] Mother’s Day we are traditionally a full restaurant, [it’s] a fitting time to launch really.” Pre-order online.
Brunch boxes from Sparkke
Start mum’s day right with a brunch box from Sparkke featuring free-range eggs from Falkai Farm, Boston Bay Smallgoods’ smoked leg ham, vine-ripened tomatoes from Kasim Erkoc’s Murray Bridge farm, and Abbots and Kinney sourdough, as well as house-made muesli and Belgian chocolate-chip cookie dough. Plus orange juice and a bottle of Alpha Box & Dice prosecco for brunch-appropriate bubbles.
The restaurant also has lunch or dinner covered with chef Emma McCaskill’s heat-and-eat moussaka (lamb or eggplant) and for dessert, a special Mother’s Day brioche doughnut with raspberry and plum jam and freshly whipped jersey cream. Complete the set with tasty cocktail packs (Limoncello Spritz or Warrior Martini, say) featuring drinks by Sparkke and friends, garnishes and recipe cards. The offers are “for mums; dads who do the job of mums; and grandmas, aunties and other ‘mum figures’ in our lives, who deserve to be spoilt,” says co-owner Rose Kentish.
High tea and breakfast boxes from My Grandma Ben
Plant 4 favourite My Grandma Ben is putting together house-made crumpets, nutty cocoa granola and freshly baked croissants for a Mother’s Day Breakfast Box ($35 for two people or $70 for four).
The sustainably minded cafe is also offering a High Tea Box for two to 10 people ($35 per person) with Baci biscuit sandwiches filled with chocolate-hazelnut ganache; orange, rosemary and sea salt shortbread; mini-crème-brulee tart; lemonade scones with house-made jam and cream; confit leek, dill and greens tart; sourdough crumpets with smoked Coorong mullet, crème fraiche, pickled onion and chives; and more, plus the option to add a bottle of Alpha Box & Dice prosecco ($25 per bottle). Both boxes are available for pick-up in-store.
Grazing boxes, Negroni packs and cheese boards from Apoteca
European-influenced bar and restaurant Apoteca has several Mother’s Day gift sets available, including grazing boxes (with charcuterie, baked goods and sparkling piccolo), Negroni packs and cheese boards.
They also have lunch sorted (for $85 – order ahead for collection or delivery). On the menu there’s salmon rillettes, roast chicken with an apricot and macadamia crust, and a Limoncello tiramisu for dessert. Pick up from the venue between 2pm and 5pm before Wednesday May 6 or have it delivered (within five kilometres of the CBD) between 10am and 1pm.
Bellini and biscuit packs from Pane e Latte
Broadview cafe Pane e Latte has been riding out the Covid-19 crisis with take-home packs of artisan pasta and wine for some time now. For Mother’s Day, the Italian eatery has put together a selection of gift sets dedicated to the classic Venetian cocktail, the Bellini. As well as Prosecco and peach juice, expect Italian-style biscuits, chrysanthemums and restaurant vouchers. The gift packs start at $49.
High tea boxes from Exchange Specialty Coffee
Tea, scones, cream puffs and finger sandwiches: if your mum fancies an old-school high tea, this box from Exchange Speciality Coffee has you covered. It’s $39 (for pick-up) and comes with three finger sandwiches – chicken, chipotle aioli and mixed leaf; cucumber and cream cheese; and dill cured ocean trout and avocado – plus a house-made sausage roll; Spanish tortilla; scones with strawberry jam and whipped cream; maple and poppyseed banana cake with dulce de leche; and more.
Hampers from Woodside Cheese Wrights, Kangaroo Island Spirits and more
It’s been a tough year for South Australian producers, so here’s a way of showing your support – and making mum happy at the same time. Director of Woodside Cheese Wrights Kris Lloyd has brought together leading local female producers including Sparkke’s Rose Kentish, Evebud’s Evie Harrison and Kangaroo Island Spirits’ Sarah Lark to create a selection of hampers and gift packs for Mother’s Day, starting at $95. There’s drinks from Sparkke, cheese from Woodside Cheese Wrights, gin from Kangaroo Island Spirits and more. “We have carefully curated the boxes so all you need is a couple of glasses, a cheese board and knives, so your mum can relax and enjoy,” says Lloyd.
Wine packs from Alpha Box & Dice
Can’t get to mum’s this year? McLaren Vale winery Alpha Box & Dice will deliver its Mother’s Day Gift Pack anywhere in Australia for free. Fifty dollars will get you (or rather, her) three wines – an Uncle sauvignon blanc, an NV Taro prosecco, and a Pink Matter rosé – plus a personalised card. Same-day delivery within a 10-kilometre radius of the CBD for orders placed before midday for those.
Wine and chocolate from Good Pair Days
Chocolate and wine might seem like a cliché but they’re also two very good things, and even better together. Wine subscription service Good Pair Days knows this, and it’s offering three $90 wine-and-chocolate boxes (one with red wines, one with whites and a rosé, and another mixed). All come with chocolates from Hunted & Gathered. Get in quick to get these delivered in time for the big day.
