Kangaroo Island Spirits distiller Jon Lark is referred to in hospitality circles as the Godfather of local gin. For World Gin Day on June 11, he’ll share his passion in two masterclasses.

The sessions will be held at CBD haunt The Howling Owl, a gin den inspired by Lark’s distillery. “The owner [Mick Krieg] visited and loved it so much he came back to start The Howling Owl,” says manager Alana Hockley.

There’s a lot of local love for gin. “We’ve seen a 30 per cent increase in sales since last year alone,” Hockley says. “We’re actually getting busier and busier each year.”

With over 70 gins on The Howling Owl’s menu, World Gin Day is likely to boost those sales. During the workshop Lark will run through the history of gin and how it is made. Participants will make their own, which they’ll take home in a 200-millilitre bottle.

“There will be different botanicals to smell, and if you like anything in particular you can add it to your gin,” Hockley says.

Places are limited to 15 couples per session. For everyone else, there’s plenty of gin to be consumed in the main bar.

“We’ll have drink specials on the day – happy hour is from 7pm until 8pm (two-for-one gins) – paella, live DJs and lots of competitions,” says Hockley.

New South Australian gins will be available for tasting, and garnishes can be hand-picked from the bar.
