Earlier this year we told you about the fight to save Adelaide’s beloved Crown & Anchor from a slated development that would partially demolish the historic pub and repurpose it as a multi-storey student accommodation. The fight to save the Cranker, had a Change.org petition with over 24,000 signatures, vocal Facebook groups and even mayoral support.
Fighting to preserve heritage and live music is thirsty work – and now the cause has a dedicated beer.
Local brewery Coopers has released “Save the Cranker” beer. It’s exclusively on-tap at the Crown & Anchor. It’s a “crisp golden brew” which is fitting for the golden oldie pub.
In a statement, Coopers said “the idea came up over a chat and a pint. We understand the pub is putting some of the proceeds from each beer it sells towards its campaign”.
Coopers also plenty of compliments for the pub itself, saying “the Cranker holds a significant place in South Australia’s rich hospitality and live music history. Not only is [it] a well-run local pub, but it’s an iconic gathering place at a time when our state has lost many live music and hospitality venues.”
“Venues like the Cranker are the lifeblood of the hospitality and live music industries…We believe the Cranker is a unique venue and [its closure] would be a great loss.”
