Sidewood Estate will open a new cellar door, cidery and 150-seat restaurant in Hahndorf early next year.

The winery’s existing cellar door is at longstanding Maximillian’s Restaurant in Verdun, with a deck overlooking sweeping lakeside views and a floating golf green. The new property is a five-minute drive away on a 50-acre working orchard and sheep farm on River Road.

It’s expected to be another tourism boon for the state, joining the multimillion-dollar multipurpose venue Lot 100, which opened further up the freeway in Hay Valley late last year.

“We are passionate about the Adelaide Hills and have always taken pride in being an active part of the local community,” co-owner Owen Inglis said in a press release. “We want Sidewood Cellar Door and Restaurant to add yet another dimension to the wonderful food and beverage experiences that already exist in our unique part of the world.

“We are using local tradespeople, builders and designers on the development as well as … local stone and timber. We will also showcase many other outstanding local producers from our region at the restaurant and cellar door.”

Owen and wife Cassandra Inglis established Sidewood Estate in 2004. The Five Red Star Halliday Wine Companion-accredited winery now produces 50,000 cases of premium wine a year, and has won 230 gold medals and 53 trophies at national and international shows and wine competitions. It’s also the largest certified eco-sustainable grower in the Adelaide Hills.

“As our business continues to grow it’s also vitally important for our brand to evolve,” adds Cassandra. She’s worked closely with interior designer Amanda Shier on the project. “The space will reflect our award-winning, contemporary wines and ciders, and our beautiful surroundings,” she says. “The clean and sleek, modern design of the restaurant and cellar door will feel elegant but approachable, relaxed and authentic.”

The new venue will have 10 handcrafted “cathedral-style” Victorian Ash timber trusses, a huge outdoor decked area and a two-way fireplace clad in local stone. The enclosed outdoor dining space will have a retractable roof and a woodfired-oven “pizza kitchen”.

Sidewood Cellar Door, Cidery and Restaurant will open in mid-January 2020. Sidewood’s existing cellar door in Verdun will host two Winter Reds events this weekend: a four-course dinner on Friday night and a German ski lodge party across Saturday and Sunday.
