You know an event has a good reputation when there’s a waiting list to even hear about tickets, let alone buy them. So why all the fuss about The Porch Sessions? One word: atmosphere.

It started on a porch in 2013 when a bunch of friendly neighbours gathered over a couple of bottles of wine and some live music. The porch belonged to local music-business lass Sharni Honor. She dug the sense of community, and next thing, a series of intimate garden gigs was born.

A few years on, tickets to The Porch Sessions are coveted. This is testament to Honor’s ability to bring good people and great musicians together in suburban backyards across South Australia.

The intimate concerts are whimsical affairs complete with Persian rugs, bunting, food stalls and plenty of wine. Now, for the second year running, the series moves indoors with the Cellar Door Sessions at Willunga’s Hither & Yon.

“The thing about porches and summer gardens is that they make themselves quite susceptible to the ol’ elements,” says Honor. “What better excuse to head south, to stoke the fire, crack some red wine and get ridiculously close to people you don't know?”

The Cellar Door Sessions take intimacy to a whole new level. Fifty people huddle beneath candlelight as travelling musicians unplug their instruments, drop the special effects and tell stories through song. The season kicks off on May 20 with Luke Thompson from New Zealand and South Australia’s Alice Haddy.

The setting is pretty special too. Hither & Yon is based in a former 1860s butcher shop with a fireplace, limestone walls, vintage furniture, books and paintings.

“The Hither & Yon guys are bloody dreamboats,” says Honor. “To fill that with good people and a couple of musicians is a bit of a dream.”

In addition to wine, there’s pizza, paella, {Dawn Patrol}(/adelaide/kangarilla/cafes/dawn-patrol-coffee) coffee and sweets by Four Winds Chocolate. It all sounds very cosy but to score a seat you’ll need to sign up to the mailing list and jump on notification emails fast.

“We’re yet to announce the final four sessions of the season,” says Honor. “So check back on our social media pages to get all the juicy updates.”

The Cellar Door Sessions, May 20 – August 26, wine and pizza from 5.30pm, unplugged tunes from 7pm, Hither & Yon, Willunga, $23.50, first pour is included in ticket price.
