There’s a reason the Sunday roast is a mainstay on every menu. There’s so much to love: crackling that shatters, gravy that pools into every corner and a fluffy Yorkshire pudding that earns its place on the plate.
Here, arranged by price, are six of the best roasts in Adelaide.
Windmill Hotel
The roast special at Prospect’s Windmill Hotel is available from midday until sold out every Sunday. Order it and you’ll score a generous serving of roast beef, lamb or pork with crackling depending on what’s in season, along with roast pumpkin, potato and steamed veg. It’s a steal that’s best enjoyed in the beer garden huddled under a gas heater or keeping toasty by the open fireplace.
94 Main North Road, Prospect
$17
Kent Town Hotel
Kent Town Hotel is rich in history, and its Sunday roast offering is similarly traditional. For $25 you get your pick of pork with crackling and apple puree; beef basted with a sweet Dijon mustard; or lamb with mint sauce – all served with roast veg, cauliflower cheese and a fat Yorkshire pudding. Dining spots by the roaring fireplace or on the expansive balcony make the KTH one of the cosiest spots to enjoy a roast.
79 Rundle Street, Kent Town
$25
The Mile End Hotel
The Mile End Hotel is an Adelaide pub with art deco bones, nearly two centuries of heritage and a Sunday roast to match. This roast is generous and fuss-free. Each week brings a different adventure – lamb, pork or beef – served with crispy roast potatoes, seasonal veg and gravy for just $25. It’s available from midday until it inevitably sells out.
30 Henley Beach Road, Mile End
$25
The Elephant British Pub
As you might expect, the crew at The Elephant serves classic British roasts. This English-inspired watering hole rotates between beef, lamb and pork for its $27 roast special. It’s served daily (but tragically not on Sundays, as The Elly is closed), always accompanied by seasonal roast veg, Yorkshire pudding, gravy and either horseradish, mint jelly, mint or apple sauce. Pair it with a traditional brews like a Guinness, Kilkenny, or Belhaven Scottish Brown Ale.
1 Cinema Place, Adelaide
$27
The Edinburgh Hotel
A beloved independent pub, The Edinburgh has been a Mitcham institution since 1869, and its Sunday roast is a proper occasion. Each week offers two choices of meat – potentially chicken, pork, beef, turkey or lamb – all served with seasonal veg, Yorkshire pudding and a selection of gravies and sauces. For $30 ($15 for kids under 12), it’s a relaxed Sunday affair, running from 5.30pm to 9pm. It’s made even better with $15 cocktail specials running all day.
1-7 High Street, Mitcham
$30 (adults) | $15 (kids under 12)
Pirate Life Brewery
Sure, most people go to Pirate Life Brewery for the beer, but we’re also going for the roast. Rotating weekly between beef rump and pork belly, the roast is served with seasonal veg, a Yorkshire pudding and gravy, plus horseradish with the beef or apple sauce with the pork. There’s also a roasted cauliflower vegan option with all the same trimmings. To really take things to the next level, add a side of cauliflower cheese or potato bake for $12. The best part? Every roast comes with a free pint of Pirate Life Stout. Understandably, these roasts sell out, so get in early.
18 Baker Street, Port Adelaide
$35 (beef/pork) | $28 (vegan)
