The Adelaide Central Market is a beacon for anyone that likes to eat well. Fresh seafood, meat, veggies and herbs sit alongside artisan baked goods, fresh flowers and homemade condiments.

It’s a food lover’s dream – and also Fabienne Reilly’s de facto office as the market’s general manager. Reilly spoke to Broadsheet about her favourite producers of the moment and the market stalls she keeps coming back to.

Butcher: Meat at The Market have passionate, knowledgeable butchers with a commitment to sustainably sourced South Australian meat. They’re always generous with cooking tips and advice on how to get the very best from every cut.

Seafood: We have three expert fishmongers: Angelakis Bros, Fair Seafood and Cappo’s Fish Market. Fair Seafood stands out for its 100 per cent fisher-to-consumer traceability, and you can enjoy a beautifully cooked seafood meal right there at the stall.

Spices: Gewürzhaus – which means “spice house” in German – is the spot for spices, with more than 250 single-origin spices and blends. Its Everything Bagel Blend is my go-to for instantly elevating just about anything. It’s perfect on meat, eggs or rice.

Specialty ingredients: You’ll find me at House of Health Collective at least twice a week to recharge on bottles of my breakfast kefir. It’s my favourite spot for specialty health and wellness products, plus a fantastic range of organic fruit and vegetables.

Condiments: Gourmet to Go, from Paul and Irene [Noakes], is a true family business and a perfect example of the market’s community spirit. Their award-winning house-made jams and chutneys are must-tries, alongside a great selection of local dressings and chilli sauces.

Charcuterie: Con’s Fine Foods is a Market institution for entertaining essentials. My tip is to leave time to chat with brothers Ross and Alex [Savvas]. They’re experts and always have a great story.

Cheesemaker: I can’t go past Smelly Cheese Co. Its range of cheeses from around the world is extraordinary, and I could happily spend hours there. I always say “yes” to a tasting – Valerie [Henbest] and her team love sharing their passion and knowledge.

Sweet treats: Market Bread Bar has recently expanded its range of pastries and market-made sweets, including Greek specialties. The handmade baklava rolls are a standout. It’s also well known for artisan sourdough and excellent gluten-free options.

Ice-cream or frozen treats: Jamu is the bright pink stall specialising in smoothies, super bowls and cold-pressed juices. It’s my go-to for a mid-afternoon pick-me-up. The fresh fruit icy poles are affordable, refreshing and perfect on a warm day.

Wine: The Olive Tree is my one-stop shop for local wines, from sparkling and reds to excellent non-alcoholic options.

Beer & spirits: The Kangaroo Island Stall showcases the largest range of KI produce and spirits. I’m partial to the Wild Gin made with native juniper; it also does a great Coastal Vodka. It’s best enjoyed soaking up the market atmosphere at the bar on a Friday night.
