After five years, The Beigelry is closing its doors. Owner Brendan Petty announced the news on Facebook earlier this week.
“The Beigelry will schmear its last bagels on Friday 28th June,” the post reads. “It’s been a fun five years that has seen us take a small idea to two locations and numerous wholesale friends and employing over 15 amazing staff. It’s been a privilege to serve and feed some of the best people in Adelaide.
“The decision was not an easy one, but I needed time to focus on what’s most important – my family.”
The Beigelry launched in 2015 through Renew Adelaide (which facilitates creative enterprise in vacant spaces), opening a shop in Topham Mall in the early days of its transformation. Its dense, chewy New York-style bagels – relatively new to the city at the time – became a quick hit with the CBD lunch crowd. Petty opened a second, takeaway-only site in the Adelaide train station in 2017. Both stores will trade for the last time tomorrow.
“I’ve got two little girls and with two shop fronts and the baking/wholesale it was all a bit much,” Petty told Broadsheet via email today.
“I woke up one morning and my youngest daughter was one and I felt like I hadn’t had the chance to be her dad. Our lease was coming up and [I] felt like we have had a great run, I didn’t want to hold on and resent it down the track.”
Petty says he wanted to “go out on a high”: “We have been so lucky with the Renew space,” he says, “and it was coming to a time to really push it but I couldn’t commit the 110 per cent it needed to go forward.”
Thankfully, Petty will still keep his wholesale accounts, so you can continue to enjoy his bagels at My Kingdom For a Horse, Sibling and Clement + Herron. From next week, they will also be available at The Beigelry’s next-door neighbour Booknook and Bean, and Petty says he’s likely to add a few more accounts.
“[I’ve] had plenty of enquirers for wholesale over the years and never followed it up as all our bagels are hand-rolled [and] our two shops always kept me busy enough. So we will have the opportunity to explore that more [now].”
