Just two months ago it was named SA’s top eatery at Australia’s Top 100 Restaurant Awards. But Africola is already revamping.

Following weeks of closure mysteriously attributed to smoke extractors and the flu, Duncan Welgemoed’s celebrated east-end restaurant will reopen on July 19 with a new menu and design inspired by northern Africa.

As reported by Gourmet Traveller, Welgemoed collaborator James Brown will transform the vivid, shebeen-like interior into "something more uncluttered", while a "demijohn forest" will showcase the wine of Basket Range.

As for the food, hand-pulled lamb shwarmas and injera (Ethiopian flatbread) will join the menu alongside a new focus on vegetable-based dishes. Rest assured Welgemoed’s signature smoked meats, peri peri chicken and secret-recipe hot sauce will remain alongside the new additions.
