Popular gelato chain Messina, Sydney distillery Archie Rose and Melbourne Filipino experts Hoy Pinoy are all descending on Rundle Mall for The Yard, a festival-season pop-up in Gawler Place. Find it opposite Adelaide Festival’s A Doll’s House, an art installation (and fantasy play space) by Japanese artist Tatzu Nishi.
After debuting in Adelaide at Vogue Festival last year, Gelato Messina is back for seconds. Expect flavours from last year such as Breakfast in Adelaide, fior di latte gelato with Nutella fudge and Yo-Yo biscuits; and Pavlova, vanilla gelato with raspberry-and-passionfruit puree and baked meringue. Plus, there’ll be classic such as chocolate fondant, hazelnut, vanilla and strawberry sorbet.
Perhaps most exciting are the limited-edition desserts created especially for The Yard: Off With the Fairies, fairy-bread gelato coated in white chocolate and dipped in hundreds and thousands; What’s Up Kermit, salted-caramel gelato with honeycomb chunks and whipped cream; and My Kitchener Rules, a fresh doughnut filled with vanilla gelato and raspberry puree.
Archie Rose will be manning the bar, pouring one-off and classic cocktails with its award-winning gin and vodka, plus boozy spiders made with Messina gelati. Also on pour: d’Arenberg wine, Coopers beer and Pressman’s cider.
On the savoury front, there’ll be Filipino street food from Hoy Pinoy. Feast on inihaw na manok, barbequed chicken skewers in a traditional soy glaze; sisig burritos, a traditional Filipino dish given a burrito twist; and lechon kawali, a rice bowl with slow braised, crisp fried pork belly and chilli.
On Friday nights there’ll be DJ sets and cocktail specials.
