The new 10-day festival is all about showing off McLaren Vale with dinners, lunches, wine tastings and more. Our pick? A tour of cellar doors with two donkeys, and a 10-course dinner at d'Arenberg’s Cube among 360-degree virtual vines.

Summer Vines, a new 10-day festival kicking off in the McLaren Vale on January 20, is all about highlighting the region’s singular coastal location and gastronomic bona fides with a series of intimate food and wine events.

A Story With Friends at Red Poles sees McLaren Vale wines and spirits – from boutique producers Main & Cherry, Full Circle Spirits, Berg Herring and Battle of Bosworth Wines – paired with a seven-course long lunch at Red Poles. For two weekends, Adelaide seafood spot Angler (a sustainable, Goodfish Project-accredited restaurant that Press Food & Wine’s Tom Tilbury recently named as his favourite fish and chips spot) is doing a lunchtime takeover of Pannell Enoteca winery. And one of the region’s most popular wineries, d’Arenberg, is hosting an immersive 10-course dinner at its five-storey Cube cellar door. You’ll be surrounded by 360-degree virtual vines while you enjoy food by the winery’s Singapore Circus restaurant, with three vintages to match.

And in perhaps the festival’s most unexpected event, Journey Home Wines presents Donkey Sunset: an escorted tour of vineyards and cellar doors with viticulturalist and small-batch winemaker Jodie Armstrong. She’ll be joined by – wait for it – two donkeys, Agatha and Winsome. The event also includes a three-course dinner.

Other festival events include masterclasses, croquet, live music, wine tastings and more. See the full details here.
