The Nutcracker
This season, The Australian Ballet will stage one of the world’s most popular and accessible ballets – The Nutcracker. Renowned British choreographer Peter Wright ‘s opulent take on the 19th-century classic has been performed to rapt crowds around the world.
For those who haven’t been swept up in the magic before: Clara, a young ballet student, is celebrating with her family on Christmas Eve when the magician Drosselmeyer sweeps in and gives her a nutcracker doll. At the stroke of midnight, something magical happens: the nutcracker becomes a prince and Clara escapes with him to fantastical lands.
John F Macfarlane’s impeccably detailed costume and set designs evoke the splendour of a young girl’s imagination; from her Edwardian home, to the sparkling Land of Snow and dazzling array of characters in the Land of Sweets.
A visually stunning finale to The Australian Ballet’s 2019 season, The Nutcracker will appeal across generations, young and old alike. This is a bucket list performance – if you haven’t heard the iconic ‘Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy’ before, now is your chance.
Running time: 130 mins including one interval.
