Food, booze and tunes. It’s a classic combination, and one The Happy Motel has perfected.
Equal parts catering crew and party starters, the colourful collective (now led by Jordan Jeavons since members Carlo Jensen, Andy Nowell, James Brown and Duncan Welgemoed left to focus on other projects) is back with its annual celebration, Here’s to Now.
Following sell-out events in 2015 and 2016, Here’s to Now is fast becoming the live-music event of the year, and 2017 will crank it up another notch. The line-up features producer/singer-songwriter Rainbow Chan, hip-hop/jazz crew Koi Child, eight-piece percussive force No Zu, nine-piece groove collective 30/70 and post-disco powerhouse Total Giovanni.
“This time of year everyone just wants to shake it loose, so we've programmed for lots of dancing and good times,” Jeavons says. “This is just a selection of the national acts we've loved seeing this year, a few who've skipped us on tours that we had to make happen, and some of our favourite locals.”
In a massive coup, Adelaide soul and funk outfit The Transatlantics will return after a four-year hiatus to perform a 10th anniversary show. Jeavons says it was “one of those lovely mutually agreeable scenarios”.
“[Bassist Ross McHenry] let slip they were thinking about new music and we were pretty quickly on the same page about a comeback performance. We've got so many great memories with this band, we can't wait for it, it will be a special moment.”
Locals Timberwolf, Flamingo, Sparkspitter and Joy & Sparks are also on the bill. An all-day DJ stage will feature Paradise Loft Soundsystem, Oisima, Young Muscle and Los Hedonistas.
Set against the scenic backdrop of Coriole Vineyards, the event is a hot ticket on Adelaide’s musical and epicurean calendar. Jeavons is keeping the menu under wraps for now, but he has revealed the additions of a ceviche and oyster bar, a cocktail bar, a new converted barrel smoker and “unlimited prosecco”.
“We're plotting and scheming and working hard to make it better than ever,” Jeavons says. “We're changing it up a lot this year and working closely with Tom Reid and the amazing Coriole restaurant team and their beautiful kitchen garden. We want to make it easy, accessible and fun.”
Here’s to Now will be held at Coriole Vineyards on Saturday, January 7 at 2pm. Tickets are $85 (+BF) or $115 (+BF) with return bus fare and available here.
