Womadelaide has announced it will go ahead in 2021 in a “re-imagined” format in a new CBD venue.
In a big departure from its usual set-up, the festival will be held in Ityamai-Itpina/King Rodney Park (opposite Rymill Park between Wakefield Road and Bartels Road) as a series of four seated sunset concerts with an all-Australian line-up. It's the first time the festival has moved from its Botanic Park setting in its 29-year-history.
“After regular consultation with SA Health over many months, it has become clear, in light of the global pandemic, that it would not be possible to present the full festival across seven stages in Botanic Park,” director Ian Scobie said in a press release.
“While the sunset concerts will be a departure from the format that our audiences have come to know and love, we are working hard towards creating a joyful celebration of Womadelaide’s 29-year history and place in Adelaide’s renowned summer festival season.
“Our priority is the safety of our audiences and artists, and the concert series set-up – with one spectacular stage, limited capacity and reserved seating - will enable us to proceed in a Covid-safe manner approved by SA Health.”
Womadelaide 2021 run from Friday March 5 to Monday March 8. The line-up will be announced over the coming weeks.
