Kick off your Sunday shoes – guests at private functions will be able to cut footloose from Thursday. And stand-up consumption will be permitted in beer gardens.

Dancing will be permitted at private functions from 12.01am Thursday, SA police commissioner Grant Stevens announced on Tuesday.

The changes will allow a maximum of 50 people on a dance floor, however, the ban remains in venues such as bars, pubs and clubs. Some good news for those venues: stand-up consumption will again be permitted in outdoor areas (such as beer gardens).

The current cap of 150 people at private functions (outside the home) remains, as does the cap of 50 at a home gathering.

Dancing in SA had previously been limited to the bridal party at weddings. A statewide ban came into effect on July 15 following outbreaks in Victoria and Queensland.

Changes have also been announced for people coming into SA from Southeast Queensland: from 12.01am Saturday September 25, those travelling from the Brisbane and Logan council areas will no longer be required to have tests on days one, five and 13.
