South Australia Reintroduces Restrictions for Public and Private Socialising

Home gatherings are now limited to 10 people. And patrons must be seated when drinking alcohol in licensed venues.

South Australia has reintroduced restrictions on public and private socialising, Premier Steven Marshall announced in a press conference today.

Starting Wednesday, the maximum number of people permitted to gather at a private residence will be 10 (down from 50). Patrons at licensed venues will need to be seated when consuming alcohol – with or without food.

There are no changes to density rules in venues, but the premier said he was “looking at this very carefully”. The government is also considering reducing numbers allowed at football matches and fitness studios.

The changes are a direct response to the ongoing situation in Victoria (which moved into stage-four lockdown on Sunday) and an increase in new local cases in the past two days.

“[Community transmission] has been absent from South Australia for a long period of time and we don’t want it to come here. We also don’t want to see the types of lockdowns occurring in Victoria right now to return to South Australia.

“We’re going to do everything we can to stay in front of the game.”

More to come.
