Vegetarians sometimes come off second best when dining out, but at Veggie Velo they’re joined by meat-lovers in the line for a burger. The fried quinoa or mushroom and haloumi burgers are cooked fresh wherever the big tricycle happens to pull up. That could be anywhere in the city, but Fridays on Leigh Street are particularly popular, always attracting a crowd during the lunch rush.
Fillings include fresh greens, beetroot, house-made onion jam, vegan chilli mayo and avocado salsa, all sandwiched by a wholemeal bun. Then there are some more unusual choices – sweet potato, cashews and carrot.
If you’re not keen on burgers, Veggie Velo’s salads contain a lot of the same ingredients, topped with the aforementioned quinoa patty. Still, why wouldn’t you opt for one of the few burgers that might actually be good for you?
