Handsome and the Duchess

6:30am - 4:00pm
16 McHenry Street Adelaide 5000

If Adelaide is a hotpot of multicultural ideas, cuisines and customs, Handsome and the Duchess is a ladleful of the contents.

Its sandwiches and salads come in Thai, Mediterranean, Vietnamese and Scandinavian varieties, while coffees are supplied by three different roasters: Umami, Mecca and Monastery. The mint green Synesso coffee machine sets the scene in an environment that has been decked out with a 1920s grandma’s house in mind.

Just like at your grandma’s house, Handsome and the Duchess will feed you more than is possibly required. Macarons come in flavours such as chocolate freckles, red velvet and strawberry lime – and they’re about three times the size of the regular kind. Other treats are baked daily by the Duchess (co-owner Shinae Haider) and include Thai beef pies, Persian love cakes and three different types of brownie.

The other half of the Handsome and the Duchess duo (Syed Haider) can be found at the coffee machine eager to talk about the farms from which the coffee beans have been sourced, or to recommend the Thai beef pie.

The food is intended to be taken away, but sit-down options are available with a limited breakfast menu that includes fruit salad, croissants, muesli and toast.
